Understanding Sleep Cycles

What are sleep cycles?

Sleep occurs in cycles, each lasting about 90 minutes. A full cycle moves through light sleep, deep sleep, and REM (rapid eye movement) sleep. A typical night includes 4–6 complete cycles.

Why 90-minute cycles matter

Waking at the end of a cycle—rather than in the middle of deep sleep—reduces grogginess and helps you feel more alert. This calculator counts backward (or forward) in 90-minute blocks to find the best times to sleep or wake.

The importance of REM sleep

REM sleep, which dominates the later cycles of the night, supports memory consolidation, learning, and emotional regulation. Getting 5–6 full cycles gives your body enough time in REM for full restorative rest.

Tips for better sleep quality

  • Keep a consistent sleep schedule, even on weekends.
  • Avoid screens and bright light at least 30 minutes before bed.
  • Limit caffeine after mid-afternoon.
  • Keep your bedroom cool, dark, and quiet.
  • Aim for 5–6 complete sleep cycles (7.5–9 hours) per night.
