How to calculate pavers

Calculating the number of pavers you need starts with knowing your project area and the size of each paver. First, measure the length and width of your patio, walkway, or driveway. Multiply these dimensions to get the total area in square feet. Next, calculate the area of a single paver by multiplying its length by its width (in inches, then divide by 144 to convert to square feet). Finally, divide the total project area by the single paver area to get the exact number of pavers. Always add a waste factor of 5–15% to account for cuts, breakage, and mistakes. Choosing the right paver size

For base material, estimate 1 cubic yard of compacted gravel per 80–100 sq ft at 4 inches thick. For bedding sand, 1 ton covers roughly 100 sq ft at 1 inch thick. Buy polymeric sand by the bag — one 40 lb bag fills about 75–100 sq ft of standard joints. Always round up and keep 5–15% extra pavers for future repairs, as dye lots vary and matching later is difficult. If your project has many curves or diagonal patterns, increase the waste factor to 15–20% because cutting losses rise significantly.

Maintenance tips

Paver surfaces are low-maintenance but not maintenance-free. Sweep regularly to prevent debris buildup in joints. Rinse with a garden hose as needed; avoid pressure washing above 1500 psi which can dislodge joint sand. Re-apply polymeric sand every 2–3 years as joints settle and erode. Seal pavers every 2–3 years with a penetrating sealer to protect against stains, fading, and efflorescence. Address weeds promptly — pull by root or use a targeted herbicide.
